Tudor Place Bowling Green
Take a rest near the verdant grasses of Tudor Place's Bowling Green. Gentle wind through the grass, distant birdsong, and the gentle sound of water flowing in the nearby fountain.
The Bowling Green was the favorite garden spot of Armistead Peter 3rd, the property’s last private owner. At the southern end, the brick-edged lily pond is adorned with a statue by sculptor Paul Wayland Bartlett, stepfather of Caroline Ogden-Jones Peter, Armistead Peter 3rd’s wife. The statue replicates a figure from Bartlett’s 1909 design for the U.S. Capitol pediment, house wing. His works are well represented in the Tudor Place Collection.
At the opposite end, terraced above, is the Summer House, built in 1960-1961, offering a delightful view of the garden framed by a pair of matching greyhounds sculpted in lead.
Prominent in the Bowling Green entry path stands a tall fountain adorned by a copy of the Andrea del Verrocchio statue, "Putto with a Dolphin." Armistead Peter 3rd acquired the replica in 1961 from Erkins Studio. He had the statue made into a fountain and placed atop a birdbath for the garden in 1961-1962. As he wrote in his book, Tudor Place (1969), “The little Verrocchio angel is a fine bronze casting made by the lost wax process.” The original bronze, c. 1465/1480, is in the Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, Italy.
