Nocturnal life
It is impossible to escape sound in this city. Along with a riot of colour amongst ochre-grey flats and tenements, even the air smelt vibrant. Coffee, gasoline, flowers, smoke, spice, the acrid stench of human life hung in a haze around the second story of everywhere. Leaves shifted. Features shimmered. The bustle of traffic marked incandescent grids across town; From the next room along came the indistinct thud of a sound system, leaning against the paper-thin wall like a hunter's trophy. Even the shuttered windows, flung open and tied back with wire provided no respite; individual conversations swelled with the power of a tuning orchestra. But for a moment, the slumbering figure shrouded in linen was more audible still - snoring slightly. Barely holding back a smile, the other slid from the sheets, collected their thoughts and their glasses, before heading for the kitchen with the quiet concentration of one intent on not disturbing the one they care for.
