In mid-19th century England, you sit on a hard wooden bench looking over your texts at Lowood School for orphaned girls. Now and then, the chatter of the older girls rises up. A grandfather clock ticks away the minutes as rain patters on the windows. The underteachers patrol the room, shushing and tapping students back to their studies.
