Bedside Window
When I was around ten or eleven, my family lived with my grandparents for a year. They lived on a quiet little street, up a steep hill overlooking the highway. The traffic below was distant enough not to be an annoying racket, but close enough so that, at night, with the windows open in the summer, the endless, whirring drone of tires on the roadway would drift up to the room my sister and I shared. Sometimes I'd just lie awake and listen, and wonder where all those cars were going at all hours of the night. That ethereal, midnight hum has left an indelible impression on my life, and I've been longing to recapture it ever since.
I didn't find a "traffic on the highway" file that I felt works with this, but there's one at http://www.freesound.org/people/cognito%20perceptu/sounds/17869/
